Project Description | One-Two Sentences NC State University is seeking proposals from qualified and
experienced companies to manage a study to assess the
feasibility of establishing (constructing and operating) an
advanced nuclear research reactor. The purpose of this
feasibility study is to assess the technical, financial, and
operational aspects of establishing and operating the
reactor, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements
and industry best practices.
The study will involve the following key components which
are named key areas (KAs):
1. Site assessment and selection for an advanced research
and test reactor i.e., the suitability of potential sites
for such reactor.
2. Environmental impact study and analysis.
3. Nuclear and safety analyses of the reactor and
determination of licensing requirements.
4. Evaluations of engineering, construction factors, and
building code requirements of the reactor and associated
laboratories.
5. Development of detailed cost estimates for the
construction and operation of the reactor and associated
laboratories.
6. Evaluation of potential funding sources and financial
models for the project.
7. Utilization analysis.
8. Assessment of capability development for advanced nuclear
in the state.
9. Vendor, fabricator, designer, and contractor evaluations.
10. Identification of the potential for collaboration with
industry, other academic institutions, and State and federal
entities.
11. Identification of programmatic needs for associated
laboratories and support spaces.
Current project authority is for planning only. The selected
firm may be retained for design and construction at the
