Background
In 2023, the North Carolina General Assembly passed legislation prohibiting UNC constituent institutions and North Carolina community colleges from receiving accreditation by an accrediting agency for consecutive accreditation cycles. Under this new law, colleges and universities must pursue a change in accreditors as their current accreditation cycles come to an end in the coming years.
A university that pursues accreditation with a different accrediting agency in accordance with this section shall pursue accreditation with a regional accrediting agency:
- Higher Learning Commission
- Middle States Commission on Higher Education
- New England Commission on Higher Education
- Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
- Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges
- Western Association of Schools and Colleges Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges
If the university is not granted candidacy status by any regional accrediting agency different from its current accrediting agency at least three years before the expiration of its current accreditation, the university may remain with its current accrediting agency for an additional accreditation cycle.
