| Project Description | | One-Two Sentences
North Carolina Central University (NCCU) urgently needs a
new 800 HP steam boiler system. The 1800HP Steam Boiler #1,
once essential for campus heating, is out of service and
tagged "Discontinued Use." The campus now relies
on the aging 900HP Steam Boiler #2, which is showing
significant signs of wear and tear. This boiler is the only
unit capable of heating all 43 buildings during fall and
winter, but its reliability is questionable. A smaller 600HP
Steam Boiler used for summer needs cannot handle peak loads,
leaving NCCU without a reliable source of steam for heating
and hot water. Any failure in the 900HP boiler could lead to
significant heating issues affecting a substantial portion
of the campus including several residence halls and the
dining hall. Therefore, replacing the inoperable 1800HP
Steam Boiler#1 is crucial to ensure a reliable and efficient
heating system for the campus. A previous boiler replacement
project was unsuccessfully bid, but will provide planning
information to aid the current urgent effort. Project scope
includes replacement of the boiler, piping, valves,
condensate pumps, variable frequency drive (VFD) controls
and water pumps, replacement of steel structure to support
the boiler, and an economizer for Boiler #3 to assure its
continued operation. The roof must be removed to provide
access for the existing boiler's removal and
installation of the replacement. The costs of removing and
replacing the roof are included in the project. | |
