Cameron Brown
Cameron K. Brown of Raleigh, NC, serves as an ex-officio member of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors. His term will end with the 2024-25 academic year.
A master's student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Brown received his undergraduate degree in community and regional planning from East Carolina University in 2024. He currently serves as president of the UNC Association of Student Governments, the student-led governance body for the 240,000 students and 17 institutions of the University of North Carolina System.
Brown formerly worked as a congressional district intern for Congressman Donald G. Davis, providing services to constituents, assisting with casework, and supporting office staff in North Carolina's 1st congressional district. He worked as an undergraduate research assistant at East Carolina University, collecting income population data for the Bertie County government, and helping to summarize findings and impact for the county's workforce and economic growth. Additionally, he served as a workforce development intern at the North Carolina Department of Commerce, providing career coaching and resume building services, conducting job market research, and organizing and hosting hiring events.
Brown was also active in student government during his time at ECU and was the 2024 recipient of the East Carolina University Student Government Association's Cupola Award.
A first-generation college student raised by a public-school teacher and single mother, Brown has a deep-seated passion for education and a strong desire to advocate for students. His involvement in student governance and advocacy has shown him the importance of including student voices in decision making - a perspective he is eager to bring to the Board of Governors. He is most passionate about student success and wellbeing, affordability and accessibility, support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Serving Institutions, workforce development, and sustainability and innovation.
His hobbies include travel, volunteering with local organizations, cooking, concerts, festivals, and outdoor activities - such as ECU football games.
Brown's advice for other students:
"Discover your passions and strive to excel in them. Equally important to pursuing your passions and achieving success is prioritizing self-care throughout your journey. Your well-being is crucial, so remember to take care of yourself along the way. Lastly, always remember the impact of your actions on others. People may forget what you said or did, but they will never forget how you made them feel."
