RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of North Carolina System, in conjunction with the North Carolina Community College System, today issued a Request for Information (RFI) seeking accrediting agencies interested in accrediting UNC System constituent institutions and North Carolina community colleges.

In 2023, the North Carolina General Assembly passed legislation prohibiting UNC constituent institutions and North Carolina community colleges from receiving accreditation by an accrediting agency for consecutive accreditation cycles. Under this new law, state colleges and universities must pursue a change in accreditors as their current accreditation cycles come to an end in the coming years.

The RFI, sent to five regional accreditors, seeks information on whether the agencies are interested in adding institutions from the UNC System and North Carolina Community College System to their portfolios, and, if so, the process by which the institutions could pursue accreditation.

Responses are expected by Feb. 29, 2024.
