North Carolina Central University (NCCU) has selected 21 students to make up the second cohort of the incoming Cheatham-White Merit Scholars to receive the state-funded merit scholarship award.
Established in 2017, the Cheatham-White Merit Scholarship Program was funded with $3.2 million authorized by the North Carolina General Assembly to create four-year scholarships at NCCU and North Carolina A&T State University. The awards cover tuition, room and board, student fees, books, a laptop computer, supplies and personal expenses, including four summer experiences that could include international studies.
The scholarships are named for Henry P. Cheatham and George Henry White, both African-Americans from North Carolina who served in Congress in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
