Conservatory Model. Innovative Approach.
Celebrating 60 years in 2025-26, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) is a top-ranked arts conservatory with one overarching mission: to prepare emerging artists for professional careers in the evolving global arts and entertainment industry. Five arts schools – Dance, Design and Production, Drama, Filmmaking, and Music – encompass more than 40 concentrations, from animation to animatronics and from ballet to brass. Talented students, selected through audition and portfolio review, are mentored by faculty who are practicing artists, chosen for their experience and expertise from a lifetime in the arts.
Offering undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate studies, UNCSA also provides a specialized high school with free tuition for in-state residents. To ensure their broader education as citizen artists, students are supported by academic programs specifically tailored for them. Cross-disciplinary artistic collaboration is encouraged and promoted via opportunities arising from the unique arts ecosystem on campus. While respecting the traditions of artistic foundations, UNCSA also explores the cutting edge of the future of the arts, from devised theater to improvised music.
America’s first state-supported arts school, UNCSA was established by the N.C. General Assembly in 1963 and opened in Winston-Salem (“The City of Arts and Innovation”) in 1965. It became part of the University of North Carolina System when it was formed in 1972.
