North Carolina Central University has received a $1 million National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to expand its capabilities in experimental nuclear astrophysics.
The funds were provided by the NSF’s Excellence in Research program to bolster the university’s research infrastructure while supporting novel investigations into the properties of neutron stars by studying the behavior of nuclear excitations, which are modes of nuclear vibrations.
“This funding will allow NCCU to expand our work in this cutting-edge area of science and provide our students with mentored research opportunities and next-generation tools that will help attract and retain more STEM majors,” said NCCU Chancellor Johnson O. Akinleye, referring to the study of science, technology, engineering and math, where minorities have been typically underrepresented.
