N.C.G.S. §
116-143(d) authorizes the Board of Governors, in its discretion, to provide
regulations that allow statutorily described faculty and staff within the
University of North Carolina to take a certain number of courses per year tuition-free,
as established in the statute, and to specify when fees may be waived.
The
Board of Governors supports its faculty and staff being able to enroll in
courses at its constituent institutions, provided such enrollment does not
interfere with normal employment obligations, and hereby adopts this policy to:
1.
Authorize application of the tuition-waiver provision as provided
by N.C.G.S. § 116-143(d) at any constituent institution of the University of
North Carolina, to be used by faculty and staff of any constituent institution
of the University of North Carolina, the North Carolina School of Science and
Mathematics, the University of North Carolina Health Care System, and General
Administration;
2.
Authorize and specify when fees may be waived for faculty and
staff who are eligible to take courses with tuition waived; and
3.
Authorize the president to adopt regulations and guidelines as may
be required or useful for uniform application throughout the University of the
tuition and fees waiver privilege, including specifying the number of eligible
courses consistent with the statute.
