The College of Arts and Sciences Department of City and
Regional Planning (DCRP) resides in the New East building,
located in the historic core of UNC's campus. In
contrast to its campus counterpart, New West, New East is
not compliant with the American Disabilities Act because it
does not have an elevator. This project will evaluate the
current building program and historic limitations and will
identify the most effective location for a new elevator that
minimizes disruptions to the building use and historic
defining characteristics. The project will include limited
areas of asbestos abatement, demolition of floors, walls,
doors, ceilings and casework to accommodate the proposed
work. This construction project will include the
installation of a new elevator shaft, footing and foundation
with minor roof and interior work as required to complete
