The Department of Residence Life Programs and Housing at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) is committed to organizing monthly service-learning outreach projects for the surrounding campus and Winston-Salem community. “Big Help” is the title that has been given to this initiative, with the goal of modeling volunteerism and creating opportunities for students and giving back to organizations in the community.
For example, UNCSA hosts the annual UNCSA Chocolate Festival for the Susan B. Komen Foundation, which raises over $2,300 each year. Outside businesses are invited to supply chocolate treats for the participants. A bakery in town named Ms. Pumpkin’s supplies the most popular stand, which has a chocolate fountain with multiple dippers. In return, students go to their location for a week-long opportunity to volunteer.
Ms. Pumpkins does an annual fundraiser in November where families build and decorate gingerbread houses. This year, staff and students from UNCSA decorated the store, built gingerbread houses and supported the families who participated. All proceeds went to The Special Children’s School.
