Many larger companies in northwestern North Carolina are engaged in exporting -- but smaller firms are often not aware of growth opportunities related to international business.
Appalachian State University has significant resources which can help companies in the region develop and implement international strategies. More than 500 Appalachian State students travel abroad each year and hundreds of faculty members have extensive experience working and traveling abroad. The U.S. Commercial Service in Charlotte and the International Trade Division of the N.C. Department of Commerce in Raleigh have resources available to assist companies.
Bringing together regional businesses with all of these resources is one way that ASU is meeting UNC Tomorrow goals of enhancing economic transformation in the region and making our faculty and students more globally competitive.
On June 5, 2009, the Walker College of Business launched a new partnership with the N.C. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Commercial Service (BuyUSA). One Friday each month a satellite office of the U.S. Commercial Service operates in Raley Hall. Experts in exporting and export financing help regional firms interested in selling their products or services abroad. On these same Fridays, internationally oriented seminars and conferences are held. On July 10, a delegation from Brazil led by Ceará state congressman Francisco Caminha discussed opportunities in Brazil. Future programs will focus on Cuba (August 14), Chile and Argentina (September 11) and Africa (in conjunction with the Global Opportunities Conference on October 9, www.2009goc.com).
