Program Highlights

The UNCW NC TEACH program begins in January and concludes in December. This schedule provides more advanced preparation and coursework for lateral entry teachers prior to the start of the school year. The UNCW program is offered using online, distance learning, and face-to-face sessions at the UNCW campus and at our extension site in Jacksonville.

 

NC TEACH participants, in the current and past cohorts, will begin receiving support through the Watson School of Education’s First Years of Teaching Support Program. These teachers will receive personal and electronic access to mentors and support materials for their first three years of teaching.

 

Estimated Program Cost

$2500-$3000. Participants are additionally responsible for tuition and fees for additional courses required for licensure areas, Praxis Specialty Area Test fees, textbooks and materials costs and a UNCW Parking permit.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a related area
  • Demonstrate at least 3 years of successful work experience
  • Successfully complete an on-site interview with a panel of educators
  • Have an average grade of B (3.0) in the major area of undergraduate study
  • Have a minimum 2.7 or better cumulative GPA (Grade Point Average) for all post-secondary work
  • Pass Praxis I (Reading, Writing, Mathematics) – special undergraduates or pass the Miller Analogies Test or Graduate Record Exam – non-degree graduates
  • NC TEACH will accept current lateral entry teachers who have not taught more than one year and who have not had more than 3 hours of education coursework.
  • UNCW’s NC TEACH program will only consider applicants with the following bachelor’s or master’s degrees:

Biology

Chemistry

Mathematics

*Accounting (Middle School only if have at least 15 hours of mathematics coursework)

Psychology

Child Development

Social Work

Speech/Language

Counselor

Sociology

Required Application Documents

Students may apply to UNCW as either special undergraduate extension students or non-degree graduate extension students. Individuals who plan to earn a graduate degree following completion of the NC TEACH program should consider applying for graduate admission since 12 hours of graduate coursework can be earned through NC TEACH.
