Planning for the next iteration of the IT Strategy

  • Information Resources will work closely with the Board of Governors’ Task Force on the Future of Information Technology, a blue ribbon panel that will examine a comprehensive set of IT tools and services and establish a context for the next phase of the University’s IT strategy.  Information Resources will develop a funding strategy to support the efforts of the University and the 16 campuses.
  • Information Resources will collaborate with MCNC’s Grid Computing and Networking Services company and the Rural Internet Access Authority (e-NC) on the recently launched North Carolina Grid Computing Initiative, a multi-year, multi-million dollar program that will harness the power of grid computing and make North Carolina will one of the first states in the nation to deploy a statewide computing grid.
  • Information Resources will provide leadership on adoption of a network security plan that offers protection from service attacks as well as acts of terrorism, while providing campuses the flexibility to enhance certain standards to meet unique needs.  The UNC Net Study Group will issue final recommendations after receiving comments from campus CIOs and reviewing proposed statewide standards.
  • Networking and Media Services is conducting a needs assessment and review of network facilities and IT infrastructure in the Office of the President and affiliated sites.  NMS will implement an approved plan once priorities and budgets are established.

Providing support for e-Learning and Distance Education

  • The TLT Collaborative will support the e-Learning Pedagogy user group in identifying the technical support issues on the 16 campuses that affect students’ ability to access online material effectively.
  • Networking and Media Services will continue work with the net study committee on network security issues and take the lead in specifying and securing the IT infrastructure required for expansion of initiatives in the Office of the President and campuses

Enhancing affordability of attending UNC

  • Coordinated Technology Management will hold down costs and save resources by seeking innovative and effective ways to streamline acquisitions, licensing and maintenance agreements.
  • Decision Support Integration, Networking and Media Services, and Online Services will continue their partnership with campuses and other divisions in the Office of the President to evaluate data warehousing opportunities and identify the most efficient ways to collect and analyze data.  Eventually, UNC will build a complete data warehouse infrastructure which will include data marts for finance, student services, and human resources information.

Meeting the needs of the state's public schools

  • The Teaching and Learning with Technology Collaborative will work with University-School Programs and the TLT interest group on e-Learning pedagogy to facilitate a sub-group that focuses on teacher education e-Learning issues.
  • Online Services, working with N.C. School of Science and Math, will develop a password protected web site to serve as a professional development system for K-12 teachers.
  • Networking and Media Services and Online Services will partner with University-School Programs to develop a password-protected web site and data warehouse that will identify causes of the teacher shortage.
