Data Analysis & Management
Background and Purpose
Data Integrity is critical given the integrated nature of the Banner ERP systems in place at fifteen of the University campuses. Successful implementation of a standard HR and Payroll model and utilization of a Shared Services Center for back payroll processing is directly related to the quality of data within the existing Banner systems at each of the nine central payroll university entities. It is the intent of this Standard to assure the quality and correctness of biographic and demographic information associated with HR/PY processes. The current environment of “data silos” in the various Banner modules has led to questionable data quality which has, in turn led to invalid data, inefficient data management processes, and confusion in the utilization of information. The UNC FIT project has developed a Data Analysis and Management strategy to guide the development of a data quality and correction plan for the Banner campuses. Once the data quality and correction plan is implemented for the nine central campuses and the HR/Payroll project is completed, the data analysis and management processes and standards will be implemented in the remaining Banner campuses.
Baseline Standard
The UNC General Administration defined the following baseline standards for Data Quality and Correction to assure the accuracy of data within the Banner systems as part of the Finance Improvement and Transformation project.
- Make all corrections to the data within the appropriate data source system.
- Assign a data custodian to be responsible for each data element.
- Identify, in the case of multiple resources using the same data, a system of official record in which a primary record "feeds" other systems requiring the data element.
- Establish a process to ensure the accuracy and quality of data.
