Current and Upcoming Statewide Initiatives (coordinated outside of GEAR UP NC)

Decision Day: May 1, 2013

  • The goal of Decision Day is to recognize high school seniors (and their families) for their postsecondary plans and encourage younger students and families to prepare early for postsecondary education.
  • Decision Day is held annually on or around May 1st and is designed to coincide with the date that most seniors must inform a college of their plans to enroll.

  • Provide at least one career exploration and/or job service to your 7th and 12th grade students and families. Use resources on CFNC.org, take a group of students to a local employer for job shadowing, and/or bring in alum to speak about their career experience!
  • GEAR UP Students@Work Week Toolkit! Don't forget to include your district's activities in your January and February PARs

 

FAFSA Day:  Saturday, February 23, 2013 www.cfnc.org/fafsaday

Be sure to complete your FAFSA!  Click here for current GEAR UP NC outcomes (as of April 12th) according to the U.S. Department of Education, Student Financial Aid website with FAFSA completion rates for all public high schools.  Let's increase the number of FAFSAs submitted and completed, and hit at least 90% completion rates!

  • Sponsored by College Foundation of North Carolina, the NC Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, and State Employees’ Credit Union
  • During FAFSA Day, college financial aid counselors provide free information to help students and their parents/guardians submit and complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid
  • Review GEAR UP NC district expectations for this statewide initiative
  • Invite and encourage your GEAR UP seniors and their parents/guardians to register for FAFSA Day  be sure to click on your county for exact event locations. GEAR UP Coordinators and Facilitators can also arrange transportation to and from local events and volunteer during FAFSA Day.
  • Prepare students and families by providing GEAR UP services including financial aid workshops, counseling/advising, and more. Don't forget to invite your CFNC Regional Representative to help with financial aid workshops! 
  • Distribute the CFNC Student Financial Aid for North Carolinians 2012 books to seniors and review detailed tips listed in the GEAR UP NC FAFSA Day toolkitSneak peak: check out resources from the U.S. Department of Education's Federal Student Aid Office, including this informative video!
  • Don't forget to include your district's activities in your January and February PARs.

 

NC College Application Week - GEAR UP NC expectations

November 12-16, 2012

Goal: To provide every graduating high school senior the opportunity to apply to college online using CFNC.org with particular focus on first-generation students and students who may not have otherwise applied to college.

Goal: To kick-off the academic year by orienting students, families, educators, and community members on the importance of going to college and what GEAR UP NC has to offer.
