FACULTY ASSEMBLY ISSUES AGENDA - 1999-2000 ACADEMIC YEAR
The following agenda represents a survey of all the issues facing
the Faculty Assembly during the 1999-2000 year. The issues agenda will
be expanded as new items arise during the year. Issues may be addressed
by Faculty Assembly committees or the Assembly as a whole. The issues have
either been issues that committees have addressed or are continuing concerns
and action items. According to the Bylaws, committees are charged to review
and make recommendations in specific areas:
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
COMMITTEE
"...matters which enhance professional effectiveness
of faculty members in the areas of teaching, research
and public service. Leaves for professional
development, reduced teaching loads for research, and
professional travel* are relevant concerns."

1. Strengthening
and funding centers for teaching and learning on each campus
2. Training
for departmental chairs
3. Professional
evaluation of administrators
4. Continuation
of activities of Institute for College & University Teaching
BUDGET COMMITTEE
"...matters relating to educational budgets
for the State as well as for The University of North Carolina.
Responsibilities shall include the making
of recommendations on the preparation fo the budget and the
priorities which lead to allocations to
the constituent institutions." Bylaw X.F.

ACADEMIC FREEDOM &
TENURE COMMITTEE
"...matters related to academic freedom
and tenure, including but not limited to faculty role in personnel
decisions, and the preservatio of academic

term faculty
3. Trends
in the number of tenured, probationary-track, and fixed- term faculty who
teach
FACULTY WELFARE COMMITTEE
"...review factors which contribute to the
professional satisfaction of the faculty. Included among these
factors are salaries, fringe benefits,
retirement programs, working conditions, and matters related to
communications within the University universe."

PLANNING & PROGRAMS
COMMITTEE
"...matters relating educational planning
of the State as well as for The University of North Carolina,
including the review and evaluation of
programs and the criteria for the initiation or termination of
educational programs. The committee shall
inform the Assembly of the progress and nature of the five
year programs as developed by the General
Administration and the Board of Governors." Bylaw

1. Developing
additional methods to measure quality of instruction and programs within
the system
2. Evaluating
impact of the 150 day class day change
3. Tracking
the impact of the Articulation Agreement
FACULTY GOVERNANCE
COMMITTEE
"...matters relating to the Charter and
Bylaws of the Assembly, and to consider and make
recommendations on matters including but
not limited to the statute, The Code of The Univeristy of
North Carolina, the policies of the Board
of Governors and of the General Administration of The Univesity
of North Carolina."
