Resolutions Quicklist

Motion: 2005-Apr-#07
Topic: Oppose State Senate Bill 1139
Proposed by: Academic Freedom and Tenure Committee
Disposition: Adopted  4/05

WHEREAS academic freedom is necessary to advance all areas of human knowledge;

WHEREAS government control of university teaching and research is
antithetical to the free exchange of ideas; and

WHEREAS numerous protections for the academic freedom of both students and faculty alike are already substantively built into the codes,
missions, and visions of the University of North Carolina system;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT:
The University of North Carolina Faculty Assembly opposes Senate Bill 1139. The
Academic Bill of Rights seeks to remove academic expertise as the standard for decisions about teaching and research in the North Carolina University system.

Further, we urge the President of the University of North Carolina, the legislature, and the governor to oppose this bill.
