Resolution Honoring Molly Corbett Broad during her Tenure as
President of the University of North Carolina

WHEREAS, Molly Corbett Broad has served with distinction and dignity as President of the University of North Carolina for nine years, from 1997-2005; and
 
WHEREAS, President Broad has provided strong leadership, vision, commitment, and passion in guiding the University of North Carolina to new heights of accomplishment; and
 
WHEREAS, President Broad has supported shared governance, attending and participating in the UNC Faculty Assembly and encouraging university leadership to collaborate with faculty leaders in critical decision-making areas such as budget development, tuition and fees, and post tenure review; and
 
WHEREAS, President Broad has been a staunch advocate of academic freedom, being awarded the American Association of University Professors’ Alexander Meiklejohn Award for Academic Freedom in 2003, after receiving nomination by the UNC Faculty Assembly; and
 
WHEREAS, through her years of service, President Broad has labored tirelessly on behalf of the State of North Carolina and its citizens to achieve excellence in academic programs, to improve research resources and programs, to promote management flexibility at the campus level, to enhance technology-based learning resources and infrastructure, to strengthen communication among constituencies as well as collaboration with faculty, staff, and student leaders; and
 
WHEREAS, under President Broad’s leadership, the University of North Carolina has experienced a significant growth in enrollment from 160,000 students in 1997-1998  to over 196,000 students in 2005-2006, including growth in enrollment by minority students of more than double the rest of the overall student body, at a time when many universities across the nation are experiencing a decline in minority enrollment; and
 
WHEREAS, under President Broad’s leadership, accessibility to the University of North Carolina has been improved through numerous initiatives, including the College Foundation of North Carolina web portal, the University’s Focused-Growth Initiative, expanded distance education offerings, and the UNC Need-based Grant Program; and
 
WHEREAS, during her presidency external grant funds have grown to over $1 billion dollars, leading to the University’s ranking as third nationally among public university systems in the level of external support; and
 
 
 
 
WHEREAS, President Broad led a successful campaign for the largest higher education bond issue in United States history, providing $3.1 billion for new and expanded buildings for North Carolina’s public universities and community colleges; and
 
WHEREAS, these efforts have resulted in significant university contributions to culture, economic development, and quality of life for the citizens of the state of North Carolina;
 
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that President Molly Corbett Broad has served the State of North Carolina meritoriously during her tenure as President, setting high standards and leaving an impressive legacy of progress and achievement; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Faculty Assembly, on behalf of the faculty of the University of North Carolina, extends its deep appreciation and best wishes to Molly Corbett Broad upon her retirement as President, with gratitude for her years of exemplary leadership; her unwavering commitment to students, faculty, and staff; and her commendable compassion, dignity, wisdom, and honor.
