RESOLUTION ON HUMAN RIGHTS YEAR

WHEREAS, the University of North Carolina is committed to providing students with an environment for learning that stresses social responsibility and respect for human diversity; and

WHEREAS, knowledge, understanding and appreciation of human rights as elucidated in such documents as the Bill of Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights will enhance social responsibility and respect for human diversity; and

WHEREAS, the 50th anniversary of the adoption by the United Nations of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights will be celebrated in 1998; therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the UNC Faculty Assembly urge President Broad to proclaim 1998 as Human Rights Year at the University of North Carolina, to affirm the University's commitment to the rights and freedoms set forth in the Declaration, and to encourage each constituent institution of the University of commemorate the anniversary with an affirmation of its commitment to those same rights and freedoms, without distinction of any kind.
