UNC Faculty Assembly: RESOLUTION 2010-2
Regarding Communication with Faculty Colleagues on UNC Campuses
WHEREAS, leaders of the UNC Faculty Assembly have endeavored to solicit view of faculty colleagues from across the 17 campuses of the UNC system in order to advise the UNC Board of Governors about faculty viewpoints in connection with the search for the next UNC System President, and
WHEREAS, faculty leaders of the UNC Faculty Assembly wrote to UNC system chancellors to request their assistance in pursuing this objective at the request of leaders of the UNC Board of Governors; and
WHEREAS, faculty leaders of the UNC Faculty Assembly also sought to assist their colleagues within the UNC Staff Assembly to gather staff viewpoints in this important undertaking; and
WHEREAS, both faculty and staff leaders received little response from Chancellors; and
WHEREAS, faculty and staff leaders were advised by colleagues on a number of UNC system campuses that those faculty and staff leaders did not have access to campus-wide means of electronic communication with faculty and staff colleagues; and
WHEREAS, this failure of access to ready means of communication with faculty and staff colleagues undercuts the capacity of faculty and staff leaders within campuses and the UNC system to gather insights and communicate information to faculty and staff colleagues;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, THAT THE UNC FACULTY ASSEMBLY
1. Requests that the leader of the UNC system, including leaders in UNC General Administration, the UNC President, and the members of the UNC Board of Governors improve communications systems within the UNC System and its campuses;
2. Requests that leaders of UNC General Administration, the UNC President, and members of the UNC Board of Governors request Chancellors on the various campuses to take steps necessary to permit faculty and staff leaders to have access to listservs through which they can communicate with faculty and staff colleagues; and
3. Requests that leaders of UNC General Administration, the UNC President and members of the UNC Board of Governors advise the UNC Faculty Assembly and UNC Staff Assembly by October 2010 of steps taken to address the current impediments to communications within campuses and across the UNC system.
Results: No known action taken at the General Administration.
A survey of senate chairs will be conducted at the 17 September 2010 to determine progress on campuses and a report will be issued to the General Administration of any redress necessary.
