Whereas Dr. Shirley C. Browning served commendably for two terms as President of the Faculty Assembly from 1979-1980 and 1980-1981,

Whereas he has devoted 33 years of service as a faculty member at The University of North Carolina at Asheville,

Whereas he served as an officer of the Faculty Senate at The University of North Carolina at Asheville Senate for 5 three year terms, for a total of 15 years, from 1971-1973, 1974-1977, 1980-1983, 1987-1989 and 1993-1996,

Whereas he was elected by his peers as Senate Chair for a total of eight terms, from 1972-73, 1974-75, 1975-76, 1977-78, 1978-79, 1993-94, 1994-95, and 1995-96,

Whereas he helped establish the unique mission of The University of North Carolina at Asheville as a public liberal arts university,

Whereas he has been a strong advocate for faculty governance throughout his distinguished career,

Whereas he has provided sage counsel, leadership, and practical wisdom to faculty at his own campus and throughout the University of North Carolina system,

Therefore, be it resolved that on this, the twenty-fifth day of April, 2003, the Faculty Assembly of the University of North Carolina hereby expresses its appreciation, deep respect and its highest commendation to Dr. Shirley C. Browning.
