RESOLUTION REGARDING UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION

Whereas, the University of North Carolina has a primary obligation to provide undergraduate education of the highest quality,

Whereas, the first years of undergraduate study are critical to student success,

Whereas, first-year students in particular are in great need of experienced full-time faculty members,

Whereas, undergraduate education could be significantly improved by providing smaller classes and by offering greater opportunities for active learning which allow for greater student involvement with professors, more frequent feedback on performance, and greater opportunities to practice learning skills, and

Therefore, Be It Resolved that the Faculty Assembly request that President Spangler urge the Chancellors of the sixteen Universities to examine and determine how institutional focus can be directed to lower division classes in order to increase opportunities for intellectual interaction between students and instructors,

Be It Further Resolved that the Assembly request that President Spangler urge the Chancellors to begin discussions on the additional resources needed to achieve this goal.
