UNCW Rolls Out Bike-Share Program

UNCW is making it easier than ever to get from point A to B with the launch of its “Hawk Wheels Bike Share” program. Twenty-five bicycles are available for students and employees to check out 24 hours a day at four stations around campus.

In the spring, a total of 70 bikes will be available at seven stations.

UNCW Transportation is partnering with Gotcha Group – Green Operating Transit Carrying Humans Around – on the bike-sharing program.

“Students have long expressed an interest in sustainable transportation options such as the Bike Share program and we are pleased to be one of the first schools in the UNC system to offer it,” said Nick Cannon, alternative transportation coordinator at UNCW.

The Gotcha bikes are outfitted with a GPS tracking device that charges from a solar panel on the back of the bicycle. Users must sign up and register with a credit card to check the bikes in and out of the stations. A mobile app is also available for easier and faster convenience. Cannon and his staff are able to monitor where the bikes are at all times and how often they are being used. Each bike ride must end at one of the stations on the UNCW campus.
