UNCW has received a grant through the U.S. Department of State for a program titled “Innovating and Designing Engaged Applications in STEM Education.” Funds totaling $188,064 will support a one-year collaborative effort with educators in Pakistan to build STEM educational and professional capacity in Pakistani middle schools.
The new IDEA-STEM program will infuse technology in the classroom and focus on the development and implementation of learning units for middle school curriculum in water and natural management, the use of recycled or re-purposed products in waste treatment, and integrating computation modeling and experimentation.
Bill Sterrett, associate professor and coordinator of WCE’s Master of School Administration program, is lead principal investigator on the grant. An interdisciplinary team comprised of Jess Boersma, Karl Ricanek, Chris Gordon, Suhail Sukhera and Mahnaz Moallem will implement the program in partnership with faculty at the University of Education Lahore in Pakistan and four regional middle schools.
