The principal role of the University Affairs division is to establish and implement strategies for communicating the role of the University of North Carolina in the state and the nation, and to advance the strategic initiatives of the Board of Governors and the President.  The division encompasses state and federal governmental relations, communications, and advancement, as well as strategy development and analysis, which collects and compiles data relating to UNC’s 16 campuses, and the University’s economic development arm, which includes the Small Business and Technology Development Center.  UA also is responsible for the University's website development in cooperation with the Information Resources division.
