Calling Your Elected Officials
Let your elected officials know that you support UNC by making a phone call.
- Plan to keep the call to less than five minutes unless the legislator continues to ask questions.
- Be sure to state your name, association with the University, and your legislative district (it is best if you talk with your own legislator).
- Be courteous, specific, and thankful for their support of UNC.
- If your legislator is unavailable, ask to speak to the official's assistant; leave a clear and concise message; or make an appointment to meet with him/her.
- If asked to leave a message, be sure to be specific and brief, clearly state your position on the issue, leave your name and number for the official to return your call, and secure the message taker's name.
- Thank everyone to whom you spoke.
- After the call, send a thank you letter that reinforces the substance of your call, again urges and thanks the official for their support, and mentions special assistance given to you by staff.
- If you later see the legislator, be sure to mention the call.
