Through the TLT Collaborative and the UNC Division of Academic Affairs, UNC participates in MERLOT, the Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching. MERLOT improves the effectiveness of teaching and learning by providing a national online database of learning materials that can be easily incorporated into faculty designed courses in 12 disciplines. UNC is a founding member of the organization, which includes participation from 23 educational systems and consortia (as of July 2001).
Learning materials posted in MERLOT (www.merlot.org) are primarily interactive simulations, animations and tutorials that are peer-reviewed and tested in appropriate educational settings. The initiative serves as a repository of learning modules as well as a catalyst for collaboration and communication.
