An inside look at implementing UNC's IT Strategy

Workshop on UNC identity and access management

Recently, the UNC Division of Information Resources convened a meeting to discuss the development of a UNC system-wide strategy for identity and access management that supports and enhances campus initiatives.  The workshop was held June 16-17, 2005 in the General Administration Building.  Presenters included several, nationally recognized experts in identity and access management, such as:  Dr. Peter Alterman, National Institutes of Health and Federal CIOs’ Council, Keith Hazelton, University of Wisconsin-Madison and David Wasley, University of California, Office of the President (retired).  Also, representatives of several IT companies presented their industry perspective.

The workshop attracted 68 participants including representatives from all 16 UNC institutions, UNC-TV, UNC General Administration, the NC Community College System, Wake Forest University, and Duke University.  The format included presentations, and small group sessions focusing on strategy, policy, and IT architecture.   UNC President Molly Broad greeted the attendees at the workshop and expressed her commitment to developing an identity management strategy.  It is expected there will be a subsequent workshop in the fall to further the initiative and involve additional participants from the university community.  For more information, contact Vijay Verma: verma@northcarolina.edu.

House Bill restricts use of Social Security numbers

A bill introduced in the North Carolina Assembly (HB 387) prohibits campuses from using a student’s social security number as the student’s identification number for the Fall 2007 entering class of students.   The Implementation of Banner includes the discontinued use of social security numbers and the use of randomly generated numbers as identifiers.  The legislation includes an exception in cases where use of the social security number is required by state or federal law.

UNC Teaching and Learning with Technology Conference sets attendance record

A record number of participants attended the sixth annual UNC Teaching and Learning with Technology Conference at the Hilton North Raleigh Hotel, March 30-April 1, 2005 (http://conference.unctlt.org).  This year’s attendance of 400 represents a 20 percent increase over 2004. Conference attendees came from all 16 UNC campuses and included information technology staff and faculty from a wide range of disciplines.  The UNC TLT Collaborative and the UNC Faculty Assembly co-sponsor this annual meeting.

This conference is a unique opportunity for UNC faculty and staff interested in the effective use of technology in teaching and learning to:  network with colleagues, discuss emerging issues, and highlight effective practices.  Plenary speakers included Diana Oblinger, vice president, EDUCAUSE and Gary Brown, director, Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology, Washington State University.  Next year’s conference will be held on March 15-17, 2006 at the Hilton North Raleigh Hotel.  For more information, contact: Frank Prochaska, executive director of the TLT Collaborative, prochask@northcarolina.edu.

UNC-SAS partnership extension

UNC and SAS representatives have negotiated a one year extension to the five year 3 million dollar access to SAS software and services for an additional year.  The partnership, which was launched in May of 2000, has provided UNC constituent institutions with unprecedented access to software and services in academia and limited access for administrative use.  UNC users of SAS software have already entered a grace period (June 1 – August 30th) which allows UNC representatives to identify current user environments which will be instrumental in assessing future opportunities.

Each campus has a SAS Distribution contact for the partnership.  A list of distribution contacts may be accessed at http://www.northcarolina.edu/content.php/ir/partnerships/campus_contact.htm.

UNC security assessment update

Recently, the UNC institutions conducted a system-wide information technology security assessment to gauge the current security status and proactively look at areas for improvement.  The project focused on security policy, procedures, and standards, and it derived a snapshot of the campus security infrastructures.  The assessment was the conclusion of a two year process to develop and sustain a  security baseline architecture for the UNC institutions.  The assessments were performed by a team of industry consultants that have expertise in assessing security within information systems and in conjunction with the UNC Netstudy Security Sub-committee (a group of IT security professionals representing several UNC institutions).  Derrick Murray, UNC Charlotte, served as the project lead. dtmurray@email.uncc.edu .

CTM Round up

Recently, UNC renewed the following software license agreements:

  • ESRI
  • Wolfram Research for Mathmatica Product
  • Symantec Antivirus
  • Microsoft Campus Agreement
