The University Library Advisory Council (ULAC) is composed of
the directors of the 16 university libraries and a representative from UNC
General Administration. A flagship project is NC LIVE (North Carolina
Libraries for Virtual Education), a unique service that gives North
Carolinians free and ready access to electronic information resources
typically found only in large libraries. NC LIVE's web site
(www.nclive.org)
enables North Carolina's 8 million citizens to access a
virtual library that includes 3,800 magazines and newspapers, indexing to
11,000 additional publications, and the expert help of trained library
staff. At a cost to the state of about $3 million, NC LIVE provides free
access to material that would have cost libraries across the state at
least $28 million to obtain individually. NC LIVE is a joint effort by
ULAC, community colleges, private institutions and public libraries.
