Strengthening administrative systems and student services
New partnership confirms success of student portal
In 2000, UNC set out to lead the nation in the development of student portals when the Shared Services Alliance announced a collaborative effort to design and develop an innovative portal designed exclusively for prospective students.
In October 2002, the success of UNC's Prospective Student Portal (PSP) was confirmed when the University announced an agreement with Campus Pipeline, Inc., to co-develop the PSP and make it available to the broader higher education market.
The Alliance started work on the PSP when campuses began adopting the Campus Pipeline web platform. Under the new partnership, the Alliance will upgrade to the Campus Pipeline Luminis family of portal platform tools, content management and integration products, ensuring interoperability and scalable support for Alliance campuses.
By doing so, the Alliance will be able to provide better technical support for all campuses using the Campus Pipeline solution, maximize collaboration between IT offices, improve customer relationship management, and reap long-term cost benefits for the University.

SCT agreement delivers efficiency and savings
The Shared Services Alliances spearheaded an agreement with SCT that will move 13 campuses from the current SCT Plus environment for administrative systems to SCT's Banner (ERP) system. The five-year project is the largest to be undertaken by the Alliance.
By reducing the cost of service hours from $220 to $160 per hour, the Alliance expects to save about $14 million during implementation.
The new system will strengthen administrative services in five areas: alumni/development, finance, financial aid, human resources and student services.
Four regional solution centers will serve as a multi-campus hub for all banner training and common process consulting. The centers will also help ensure a cost-effective and collaborative roll-out of the system.
Prior to implementing the five modules, campuses will document their current administrative workflow using SCT's business process analysis methodology. This activity will help align business processes with the Banner software to ensure effectiveness and efficiency in operations. In addition, it will help campuses identify other processes that could be included in a common baseline.
Data model will improve access
The new agreement with SCT that will strengthen administrative services also calls for the software developer to design a unified data model for financial reporting that will provide UNC with timely, dynamic access to aggregate financial data.
The data model will facilitate efficient response to inquiries for financial data from regulatory agencies and other constituencies.
The data model will also enable each of the 16 campuses to perform comparative analyses on selected financial data and provide benchmarks against other UNC institutions.
