The UNC Shared Services Alliance ("Alliance") was officially established in March 2000. The Alliance's vision and mission establish it as a forum for UNC's 16 campuses to explore collaborative opportunities across a broad range of technology development. The Alliance Advisory Board spearheads a number of projects to bring new applications to UNC's campuses.
Web Enabling Student Services and the development of a Prospective Student Portal were the Alliance’s first two projects
The Alliance’s current collaborative project, Banner, is its largest undertaking since being established.
The Banner Project:
Responding to the need for increased service requirements and operational efficiencies on each campus and across the system as a whole, the Alliance designed a decision-making process to guide the University's search for a new enterprise system for administrative functions. In June 2002, 13 campuses (ASU, ECSU, FSU, NCA&T, NCCU, NCSA, UNCA, UNCC, UNCG, UNCP, UNCW, WCU, WSSU) united to move to SunGard SCT’s Banner enterprise system to streamline administrative services in five areas: advancement, finance, financial aid, human resources and student service. In September 2003, ECU acquired SunGard SCT's Banner system bring to 14 the number of UNC campuses implementing Banner.

Alliance Video Conference Schedule - The Alliance hosts a standing video conference on Tuesdays from 9:00 am - 10:00 am. The video conference was originally established during the Banner implementation and includes all of the campuses except NCSU and UNC-CH. With a few days notice, however, NCSU and UNC-CH can be added as participants. Use of the video conference time is not restricted to Banner topics. Any group interested in using an open video conference time should contact John N Smith, Interim Director of the Shared Services Alliance, to reserve the date.
To avoid duplication of resources and leverage expertise within the University, the Alliance contracts with campuses for products and services when possible and works in conjunction wtih Coordinated Technology Management on projects requiring outside vendors.
