Mediation Policy
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

UNC Chapel Hill encourages the informal and timely resolution of work-related problems before, during, or after a formal grievance has been filed. To this end, a mediation policy was established to provide employees a mechanism for the fair, orderly, and prompt resolution of job-related disputes. Based on requirements established by the NC Office of State Personnel, the UNC-CH Office of Human Resources has trained over thirty UNC employees to mediate disputes through the University's Dispute Resolution and Staff Grievance Procedure policy. Many of the trained mediators also serve as Grievance Panel Members. The Counseling Service administers the mediation service and decides if a dispute would benefit from mediation. If so, the requesting employee completes a mediation request form and submits it to Counseling Service, which assigns mediators and schedules a meeting with the parties involved.
