David Lombard Harrison is Associate Vice President for Legal Affairs for the sixteen-campus University of North Carolina. His primary duties are to provide legal advice and assistance concerning intellectual property, information technology, research regulations, technology transfer, purchasing, and finance related issues. He also serves as counsel for the 11-station statewide University of North Carolina Center for Public Television and The University of North Carolina Press.

Mr. Harrison is a member of The North Carolina State Bar, The State Bar of Michigan, The Bar of The Cherokee Supreme Court for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, The Tribal Bar of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan, and Federal Courts in the 4th and 6th Judicial Circuits.

Harrison received his B.A. in philosophy from Grand Valley State University, and his J.D. from the University of Toledo College of Law. He also studied at The University of Vienna, Austria.

Mr. Harrison began his legal career as law clerk to Justice James H. Brickley in the Michigan Supreme Court. After serving with the court, he practiced trial and appellate litigation and business transactions as a partner in a Grand Rapids, Michigan law firm. He served as Assistant General Counsel for Central Michigan University before joining The University of North Carolina.

Harrison is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys and has served on its Committees for Continuing Legal Education, Annual Conference, and Publication. He is also a Board member of the Triangle Intellectual Property Lawyers Association, and serves on the Board of Trustees of The Council on Law in Higher Education. Harrison serves on the Town of Carrboro Human Services Commission.

Mr. Harrison has published journal (law review) and other articles and papers in the areas of intellectual property, information technology, privacy, and research regulations, among others, and gives frequent presentations in these areas. In addition to legal publications, Mr. Harrison has published regular essays and fiction for two national outdoor magazines, was Contributing Editor for River Explorer Magazine, has been a newspaper and magazine cartoonist, and has contributed as a performer and composer on a record album. He continues to pursue the art and craft of fly-fishing whenever possible, and attempts to maintain at least rank amateur status on guitar, ukulele, and cavaquinho.
