President Broad's Charge to the Professional Development Advisory Committee
March 11, 1998
Because you have indicated an interest in professional development activities in
the past, I am asking that you serve on an advisory committee to consider the
professional development needs of faculty and department chairs/heads within
the University of North Carolina.
The advisory committee will be asked to do the following:
- Identify efforts currently underway on campuses to expand faculty expertise in teaching, instructional technology, and assessment;
- Identify programs currently available for training chairs in such mandated programs as managing post-tenure review, faculty workload reporting, phased retirement planning, assessment of student learning, etc.
- Identify faculty and department chairsÍ/headsÍ needs and desires for developmental programs with special emphasis on teaching, assessment, chair/head training in state-wide mandated programs, and instructional technology;
- Suggest a process whereby university-wide developmental activities can be maintained on a continuous basis; and
- Develop a budget request, if needed, that will support such developmental activities.
In your deliberations, I ask that you consider ways to share existing resources
and information about successful programs currently underway in one or more
institutions. Because we would like to have any budget request that may grow
out of your work ready to include in the next biennial budget request, I am
asking the committee to complete its work by the end of October.
Although much of the work of this advisory committee can be accomplished using
e-mail and other technologies, I do anticipate that you may need to meet in person
as a committee, at least once a month.
