The University of North Carolina, in fulfilling its mission in instruction, research, and service to the people of North Carolina, recognizes the importance of common global concerns and acknowledges the interdependence of nations and peoples throughout the world. With America's destiny increasingly being shaped by external forces, the University believes that international education serves to advance international understanding, peace, and security. The University has a responsibility to provide its students with the knowledge, skills and experiences to become informed and productive citizens of the state, the nation, and the world. In addition, the University must bring the educational, research and public service resources of the University to bear in addressing current and future international challenges, including political, social, economic and educational issues of importance to the state, the nation and the world.
In January 2002, the UNC Board of Governors adopted Internationalization as one of six strategic directions for the University's long-range plan. The Board stated the following goal: Promote an international perspective throughout the University community to prepare citizens to become leaders in a multi-ethnic and global society. While the goal was developed before September 11, 2001, the events of that day and subsequent developments have highlighted even more dramatically the need to incorporate an international perspective in all areas of the University's mission. In addition, North Carolina's growing immigrant population creates the need for enhancing understanding and resolving conflict at home as well as abroad. An international strategic plan, Internationalization and the University of North Carolina, has been developed to guide UNC and its constituent institutions in achieving this goal.
