Richard Chess is revered as a teacher not only in his department but also through his participation in programs such as Honors, the Master of Liberal Arts, the College for Seniors, and the Center for Jewish Studies, which he has directed since 1991. A widely published poet, he has served as a visiting artist and poetry faculty member at festivals, conferences, and universities across the United States and Israel. Chess came to UNC Asheville in 1989, and has served as director of the school's creative writing program for more than eight years. The esteem his colleagues have for him is obvious; Chess has received both UNCA's highest award for teaching in the humanities and its highest award for distinguished research and service. Chess may be reached at (828) 258-2591.
