Dr. Andrew C. Williams is a full professor in the Department of English and Mass Communication at North Carolina Central University. A member of the department since 1994, he is a specialist in early modern British literature, a member of the graduate faculty, an active scholar, and a prolific creative writer.
Dr. Williams is the author of two academic books, The Restoration Fop: Comic Characterization in Seventeenth-Century Drama (1995) and Viewing the Male: Images of Manhood in Early Modern Literature (1999), as well as numerous critical essays and reviews. He is also the author of three novels, Night Terrors (2001), Art and Becoming: The Author's Cut (2004), and The Corruptor (2009). Since 1995, he has been the faculty adviser for North Carolina Central University's literary magazine, Ex Umbra. Additionally, he has served as the Director of Advising for the Department of English and Mass Communication, the largest academic department on campus, for over a decade. He was recently asked to chair the College of Liberal Arts Academic Advisory Committee and oversee the training of academic advisers in the six academic departments in the College of Liberal Arts.
Known for his inspiring, dynamic teaching and dedicated service to the university, Dr. Williams was the recipient of the North Carolina Central University Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2003, a College of Arts and Sciences Faculty Achievement Award in 2002, and two awards from the College of Liberal Arts in 2010, an Outstanding Leadership Award and an Outstanding Adviser award. The core of his philosophy of education, he says, "is the simple belief that teachers and students are partners on an exciting journey of discovery. By viewing my students as equal partners in the educational process, I must acknowledge their inherent value as intellectuals and critical thinkers." The effectiveness of Dr. Williams' philosophy is apparent in his students' enthusiastic response to his teaching and their respect and admiration for him as a mentor and role model. As one of students put it, "There is no telling what my college career would be like without Dr. Williams. I know I speak for every student who has entered his classroom when I say that Dr. Williams is well deserving of every accolade and award for educators of distinction."
Dr. Williams received his bachelor's and master's degrees in Secondary Education from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, and he earned his PhD in Literature and Criticism from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
