Janice W. Smith

Dr. Janice W. Smith is Associate Professor of Marketing at Winston-Salem State University. She describes herself as someone with passion around ensuring that students have the best opportunities for their future, personally and professionally. Further, she challenges students to think in ways they have not felt comfortable doing before. She designs assignments to enable students to articulate their thoughts and beliefs, based on course content, current events, and their experiences. Dr. Smith has integrated technology into all of her classes and believes that ethics should be a lens through which students examine learning.

Dr. Smith teaches both graduate and undergraduate students. Both groups indicate that she is an effective teacher who motivates students to develop their potential and to be confident about their ability to perform.

In addition to advising and mentoring students, Dr. Smith serves as the advisor for the Ram Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management. Because of her work in mentoring students, she received the School of Business and Economics Most Student Sensitive Award in 2007.

In 2009, Dr. Smith was the recipient of the Winston-Salem State University Master Teacher Award and the Research Award. The comments from her students and observations from her peers indicate that she is deserving of the teaching and research awards.

Dr. Smith earned a B.S. in Business Administration and Management from Indiana University. She earned an MBA in Human Resource Management and a PhD in Organization Studies with a minor in Industrial/Organizational Behavior, Labor Relations, and Organizational Theory from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She was trained as an organizational development consultant in the National Training Laboratories Organizational Development network. Her publications and research focus are in human resource management, organizational and leadership development, and Entrepreneurship.
