The University of North Carolina is undertaking the project
of construction of the first phase of the Pedestrian
Improvements - Porthole Alley project on the Chapel Hill
campus. The project area will consist of an approximately
1.6 acre site near the Southeast corner of Franklin Street
and South Columbia Street. The project is bordered by Hanes
Art Center, Ackland Art Musuem, University Methodist Church
and the neighboring commercial properties to the north. The
project will construct a new vehicular entry off of South
Columbia Street to the north of Ackland Art Musuem. The
parking lots, walkways, and sculpture garden will be
reconstructed to provide improvements to vehicular
circulation, pedestrian accessibility, safety and lighting,
and Campus open spaces.
This project involves the following scope of construction:
-Erosion and Sedimentation Control
-Traffic Control for pedestrian and vehicular detours
-Demolition of existing pavement sections, curbs and
sidewalks
-Demolition of existing retaining and freestanding stone and
masonry walls
-Demolition and removal of storm drainage and waterline
utilities
-Installation of new storm drainage and water utilities
-Site grading
-Retaining and freestanding stone and masonry wall
construction
-Asphalt, concrete and brick pavement construction
-Concrete curb construction
-Construction of bio-retention/ BMP cells
-Pavement markings and signage
-Site lighting removal, relocation and new installation
(Includes electrical power install)
-Metal railings and fence fabrication and installation
-Site furnishings installation
-Signal loop detector/ parking access gates relocation and
reinstallation
-Coordination with University and adjacent commercial
neighbors
Contractor Prequalification:
To qualify, the contractor must have a general
contractor's license in the State of North Carolina as
well as meet applicable bonding requirements for performance
and payment bonding. The contractor must show comparable
work experience, both in complexity and dollar value, and
preferably in a University campus environment, to the scope
of work outlined above. To be considered, the contractor
must obtain an application package from the University of
North Carolina landscape architect consultant and submit a
sealed, fully completed qualification document
electronically by 3:00 pm, May 9, 2016, to M. Eric Davis,

phone to request a package. One (1) completed qualification
package must be submitted via email (electronically) to the
landscape architect consultant. University of North
