1. Briefly describe the proposed program and intended audience.

The Department of Leadership and Educational Studies intends to offer an online program leading to the Education Specialist degree in Educational Administration. The courses will be delivered via the internet beginning January 2014 with both synchronous and asynchronous online components. Six credit hours will be offered per term, with a total of 30 semester hours provided. This constitutes 100% of the Ed.S. program.

The program is designed to be offered to a cohort group with a maximum limit of 20 students. Students outside the cohort will be permitted to enroll in a course with the permission of the academic program coordinator. Internship requirements will be met by each student in accordance with academic department guidelines. Intern placement and supervision will be handled and evaluated by certified and highly qualified faculty.

The proposed audience is individuals from North Carolina who currently possess a Master’s degree, hold current principal licensure (NC licensure code 12 or its equivalent from another state) and have the appropriate experience in school settings (i.e., 3 years of public school teaching experience or approved equivalent experience).  This program is intended to be an ongoing offering.

2. Describe the proposed instructional delivery systems (e.g., on-site instruction by faculty, interactive video, Internet, etc.).

The instructional delivery system will be via the Internet, both synchronously and asynchronously.

3. Describe need for the program (referencing results of surveys or special studies).

The need for this program has been established by various phone calls, inquiries and word-of-mouth information-sharing opportunities by both Appalachian faculty and currently enrolled students. Additionally, Appalachian’s Master of School Administration and Administrative Add-On Licensure programs have both moved online in recent semesters and applications for both programs have far outpaced applications for site-based cohorts. The demand for online versions of those two programs suggests that a similar demand exists for this Education Specialist degree.

4. Projected total annual enrollment:
Year 1:20
Year 2:20
Year 3:20
Year 4:20
Year 5:20
