The U.S. Department of Education awarded the University of North Carolina General Administration (UNC GA) a two-year grant of $3.7 million for the North Carolina College Access Challenge Grant program (CACG). While UNC serves as the lead organization of the CACG, the program entails a collaborative effort of UNC GA with the NC Community College System, the NC Independent Colleges and Universities, the NC Department of Public Instruction, the NC State Education Assistance Authority, and the pre-college programs housed on the NC college and university campuses.
In an effort to build upon existing college access initiatives including the statewide college planning web portal, CFNC.org, a well-defined comprehensive articulation agreement between UNC GA and the NC Community Colleges, and a network of over 40 established pre-college programs and 41 early college high schools, the CACG will increase high school students’ preparation for college by providing online college courses and transfer advising, and expanding statewide programs to increase the number of low income students applying for college and financial aid. Specific objectives include improving the ease of transferring credit from community colleges to 4-year institutions across NC, increasing the college application and FAFSA completion rate of students, and strengthening the effectiveness of existing college access initiatives to address the needs of low income students and their families.
