The 2012 North Carolina College Access Conference brought together educators from across the state for a one day professional summit. During breakout sessions, workshops, and keynotes, attendees shared best practices, tackled issues facing our students, and discussed ways to increase college access and success.

Morning Keynote: Dr. Calvin Mackie Dr. Mackie is an award winning mentor, former engineering professor, internationally renowned motivational speaker, and successful entrepreneur. He earned a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech, and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Moorehouse College; and a Master of Science and a Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech. He served on the Tulane University Faculty, and is the founder of the Chanel ZerO Group, an educational and motivational consulting company. Through his international travels and online mentoring, he reaches millions of professionals and young people annually. Dr. Mackie has been featured in the HBO Documentary "When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Parts," and its sequel "If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don't Rise." President Bush awarded him the 2003 Presidential Award for Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring. He is the author of "A View from the Roof: Lessons for Life and Business." Lunch Keynote: Dr. Nicole Hurd Dr. Hurd is the founder and Executive Director of the National College Advising Corps, a consortium of 15 partner colleges/universities across the United States, which hires recent college graduates to serve as college advisors. She earned her Bachelor's degree at the University of Notre Dame, her Master's at Georgetown University, and her Doctorate in Religious Studies at the University of Virginia. While serving as Assistant Dean and Director of the Center for Undergraduate Excellence at the University of Virginia, Dr. Hurd founded the College Guide Program, which later served as the model for the National College Advising Corps. She serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and is the co-author of "Helping Students Navigate the Path to College: What High Schools Can Do," a publication of the U.S. Department of Education.

Closing Keynote: Dr. Debra Saunders-White Dr. Saunders-White is the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Higher Education Programs at the U.S. Department of Education. She serves as the assistant secretary's chief advisor on higher-education programs, administering more than 60 programs totaling nearly $3 billion annually. Prior to coming to Washington, DC, Dr. Saunders-White was one of the seven University of North Carolina Wilmington senior officers, and chaired the UNC System Chief Information Officer Council. She earned an undergraduate degree in History from the University of Virginia and combined a Doctorate in higher education administration from The George Washington University with an Master's degree in Business Administration from The College of William and Mary. She was recognized by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and the American Council on Education as a top leader among higher education executives.
